Staff Instrumentation Engineer
Location: Lisle, IL (hybrid)
Contract to Hire
Pay Range: $52.00 – $72.00/hour
Job Summary
The staff instrumentation engineer reviews client requirements and standards for new or updated process instrumentation. This role develops instrumentation solutions, including detailed designs, specifications, and sizing for process instrumentation like control valves and automated valves. You must have experience with DCS and PLC systems and be able to work on multiple projects at the same time.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead instrumentation projects and prepare project scopes of work.
- Attend client technical meetings and field walk-down meetings.
- Develop and produce instrumentation design solutions and deliverables.
- Perform selection and sizing of process instrumentation.
- Generate instrumentation data sheets, sizing calculations, loop drawings, installation details, instrument lists, I/O lists, and P&IDs.
- Work with the piping group for in-line piping designs, level designs, flow metering runs, and control valve stations.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Instrumentation, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
- Experience: Minimum of 8+ years.
- Licensure: Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of ISA, API, and ASME standards; working knowledge of SPI and vendor sizing software.
- Management Skills: Experience leading small teams and working with other disciplines.
- Other Skills: Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.

Field Assignment Requirements
You must meet all client-specific site requirements before deployment to any field assignment.
- Physical Mobility: Must possess physical mobility on the ground and at heights.
- Lifting: May be required to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
- Heights: May work at heights, climb ladders, and use fall protection on scaffolds or platforms.
- Weather & PPE: Must work in all weather conditions while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) like hard hats, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.
- Site Rules: May need to work in confined spaces, pass a random drug test, or follow a client's facial hair safety policy.
