Senior Power Engineer – Utility Interconnection
100% Remote

Benefits: Access to benefits package
Pay Range: $165,000 – 185,000

Summary: Responsible for the engineering delivery supporting generator and load interconnection to the transmission and distribution grid, including Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), microgrid, and other inverter-based resource (IBR) interconnections, across utility, renewable, data center, and industrial markets, from interconnection study through construction, commissioning, and energization.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform engineering analysis and design supporting generator and load interconnection to the transmission and/or distribution system, ensuring compliance with customer requirements, utility requirements, industry standards, codes and regulations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate interconnection designs seamlessly into larger electrical systems, including substations, switching stations, and grid infrastructure.
  • Support technical scoping, design, and utility/developer coordination for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), microgrid, and other inverter-based resource (IBR) interconnections at the medium- and high-voltage level, including protection philosophy, interconnection studies, and compliance with IEEE 1547 / IEEE 2800.
  • Perform and support interconnection study efforts, including feasibility, system impact, and facility studies (load flow, short circuit, stability, and power quality analyses). Independently perform detailed design for:
    • Point of interconnection (POI) one-line and three-line diagrams
    • Metering and revenue metering schemes
    • Protection & control philosophies and relay coordination in accordance with utility requirements
    • Grounding systems and electrical safety designs
    • Switching station and substation tie-in layouts
    • BESS/microgrid interconnection one-lines, protection & control schemes, and anti-islanding / transfer trip logic
    • SCADA and communications interfaces with utility systems
  • Develop and review equipment specifications for interconnection facilities including breakers, disconnects, protective relays, meters, transformers, and communications equipment.
  • Perform and/or support short-circuit, arc flash (IEEE 1584), harmonic (IEEE 519), power flow, and EMT/transient (e.g., PSCAD or equivalent) studies, including fault, harmonic, and dynamic contribution from BESS and other inverter-based resources.
  • Support interconnection application processes and LGIA/SGIA coordination with utilities, developers, and BESS vendors.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and Revit software to prepare drawings and visual aids.
  • Work closely with clients and utility personnel to understand project and interconnection requirements, provide technical insights throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support resolution of design, construction, and field issues, escalating to leadership when business or contractual risk requires involvement.
  • Support construction, testing, commissioning, and energization through RFIs, field engineering, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Participate in technical reviews, design meetings, and client and utility presentations.
  • Prepare project design and construction documents.
  • Prepare project progress reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Update and maintain shop drawing and RFI log.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive utility interconnection or power systems engineering experience, with demonstrated depth in protection & control (P&C) design across generation interconnection, substation, or energy storage applications.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience supporting engineering delivery on medium- to high-voltage utility interconnection projects (generation interconnection, substation, or equivalent), including in an engineer-of-record support capacity.
  • Hands-on protective relay experience (SEL or equivalent platform), including settings development and coordination.
  • Direct experience navigating LGIA/SGIA processes and utility interconnection requirements.
  • Experience supporting interconnection studies and applications, and working with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and/or owner engineering teams on utility, renewable, data center, or industrial projects.
