Structural Department Manager 

Location: Merrillville, IN 

Arrangement: Onsite however has the ability to be hybrid (3 days on site and 2 days remote)

Direct hire 

Salary range: 110000-165000

Position Overview

The Structural Department Manager (DM) will lead and manage a high-performing engineering team, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and internal processes. This role combines strategic leadership with technical oversight, focusing on developing team members, driving technical excellence, and delivering superior project outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, and coordinate structural engineering projects to successful completion.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to align project priorities, schedules, and staffing needs.

  • Partner with HR on recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of new team members.

  • Provide mentorship and coaching to team members, fostering growth and development.

  • Participate in project planning, cost development, scheduling, and resource allocation.

  • Utilize company work processes to ensure quality reviews and compliance across all projects.

  • Establish and maintain high standards for technical accuracy and quality control.

  • Solve complex engineering challenges using advanced analysis, best practices, and lessons learned.

  • Conduct peer reviews to guarantee deliverables meet internal and client expectations.

  • Manage schedules and budgets using earned value and forecasting tools to ensure predictable outcomes.

  • Build and maintain client relationships through strong communication and technical leadership.

  • Serve as Project Manager, Project Engineer, or Client Manager as needed for single-discipline projects.

  • Support business development initiatives by contributing technical expertise and proposal input.


Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • 10+ years of structural/foundation design experience in petrochemical, refining, or heavy industrial environments.

  • Licensed Professional Structural Engineer (SE) with ability to obtain registration in other states as required.

  • Proficiency in RAM, STAAD, TEDDS, or equivalent structural analysis software.

  • Working knowledge of Navisworks and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational abilities.

  • Prior management experience preferred.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to remain stationary for extended periods; frequent walking, climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, or kneeling may be required.

  • Frequent use of hands, fingers, and close/distance vision for design and documentation tasks.

  • May require occasional travel to job sites or other company locations.

  • Exposure to moderate-to-high noise levels or environmental conditions at client sites; appropriate PPE required.
